“Like Sunlight Burning Up Midnight”

I was running on the treadmill at the Y, headphones on, listening to Pandora radio when I heard it….”Like Sunlight Burning Up Midnight”

Wow, thank you, Francesca Battistelli! What a beautiful phrase! This is what the contemporary Christian soloist beautifully reveals in her song, Beautiful, Beautiful. I could so relate, and it made me want to shout, scream and cheer.

My life was black like midnight, too, and then came the gospel. The lyric’s line exemplifies the power the Apostle Paul speaks of:

I am not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God for salvation of everyone who believes. Romans 1:16

It was the gospel that gave the power to burn up the midnight- the darkest hours- in my life. The gospel: Jesus’s crucified sinless, blameless life and death on the cross that removed not only every single solitary sin against God and fellow man I ever committed but also all the multiplied masses of blunders and evils and mistakes and idiocies I ever engaged in. This Jesus did to make me perfectly free and cleansed and completely forgiven. Yes, I am forgiven! All those stupid things I did. All those mistakes. Gone. Caput. Washed away. Lost. Forgotten. Did you know that? Have you heard? It’s gone. All Gone. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is sunlight burning up midnight. It’s powerful.

I’ve heard many times in response to this gift of salvation, “But, but…what about this? …What about that? …You would not believe what I have done…I can never be forgiven.”

Yes. Yes you can. It’s by mercy. God is full of mercy. He is all mercy because of what Christ did. That’s good news! That’s the gospel! Just believe it. Accept it.

“Like sunlight burning up midnight, making my life beautiful, beautiful!” Thanks, Francesca! Thank you, Jesus.

Like sunlight burning at midnight
Making my life something so
Beautiful, beautiful
Mercy reaching to save me
All that I need
