“I have told you these things so that in me you might have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Jesus was quite direct. He was getting His disciples ready for the tough times that were at the door- arrest, trial, unjust judgement, beatings, persecutions, and death.
Jesus is getting us ready, too.
We will have trouble. It is at the door.
But who wants or likes trouble. I don’t want it. I get annoyed or mad or anxious when I have it. Trouble stinks! Whether big trouble or small, it stinks.
Jesus gets us ready for it, too. As His kids in this fallen world, we are literally and figuratively in the midst of it.
I don’t feel well today, I have pains I don’t want to admit I have. I had a challenging time teaching my middle school students this week and I could have handled something better. I could go on and on, and so could you. You have troubles I don’t have, and I may have no idea what you are facing. You may be facing very great difficulty, more than just the more common trials of life. You may also feel like no one could even understand what you are facing.
The disciples and early believers’ trials were neither common nor easy, just as for many believers today. Your troubles today may be easier than they were in the past and not as hard as they will be one day. In contrast, this may be the toughest time in your life.
But trust Jesus. He is there for you. Go to Him. He understands. Because He is the author of life and was himself fully human, He understands the trails of mankind. He understands without condemnation. He came into the world not to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.
If you trust Him, He will be your comfort. Jesus said He overcomes (the troubles) of this world. That’s a guarantee we can take to the bank and cash in.
So go to Jesus for comfort and believe He will work your situation for the good. Spend some time in His presence and trust Him. In Him we will have peace. If the Father sent His son to redeem the world, and Jesus in obedience and love laid down His life for you and me and all mankind, and then was raised to life so we too can be raised at death, then surely we can trust the Lord and be comforted in this trouble.
This trouble will be worked out in some way, somehow, sometime. Jesus has overcome. We can trust Him and must do what He said to do. Heed the advice of Christ, “Take heart!”
